Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

Scenario/Summary

This week’s lab highlights the use of graphics, distributions, and tables to summarize and interpret data.

Open the given academic article from the Required Resources link above.  You will find a graph OR table within the article, and then draw conclusions about the table or chart you chose, and describe other ways that the same data could be presented.

Deliverables

The deliverable is a Word document with your answers to the questions posed below based on the article you are given.

Required Software

  • Microsoft Word
  • Internet access to read article

Steps to Complete Week 3 Lab

INSTRUCTIONS:

Open a Word Document to begin your work.

Part 1:

Title your paper:  “Review of [Name of Article]”

State the Author:

Summarize the article in one paragraph:

Part 2:

Step 1:  Find a frequency table and/or graph within the article and post a screen shot in your Word document.

Example:

       Frequency Distribution      OR            Graph

Step 2: Answer the following questions about your table or graph.

  1. What type of study is used in the article (quantitative or qualitative)? Explain how you came to that conclusion.
  2. What type of graph or table did you choose for your lab (bar graph, histogram, stem & leaf plot, etc.)? What characteristics make it this type (you should bring in material that you learned in the course)?
  3. Describe the data displayed in your frequency distribution or graph (consider class size, class width, total frequency, list of frequencies, class consistency, explanatory variables, response variables, shapes of distributions, etc.)
  4. Draw a conclusion about the data from the graph or frequency distribution in context of the article.
  5. How else might this data have been displayed? Discuss pros and cons of 2 other presentation options, such as tables or different graphical displays. Why don’t you think those two graphs were not used in this article?
  6. Give the full APA reference of the article you are using for this lab.

Step 3: Be sure your name is on the Word document, save it, and then submit it under “Assignments” and “Week 3: Lab”.

Review of “Fundamental nursing care in patients with the SARS-CoV-2 virus: results from the ‘COVID-NURSE’ mixed methods survey into nurses’ experiences of missed care and barriers to care”

Authors: Holly V. R. Sugg, Anne-Marie Russell , Leila M. Morgan , Heather Iles-Smith, David A. Richards, Naomi Morley, Sarah Burnett, Emma J. Cockcroft , Jo Thompson Coon, Susanne Cruickshank, Faye E. Doris, Harriet A. Hunt, Merryn Kent, Philippa A. Logan, Anne Marie Rafferty, Maggie H. Shepherd, Sally J. Singh, Susannah J. Tooze and Rebecca Whear

This was a mixed methods online survey study that was conducted to assess the opinions and the experiences of nursing staff on essential nursing care that is not provided or missed or any barriers to provision of care to inpatients with Covid 19. The study focused on inpatients not invasively ventilated. Using convenience sampling method, a total of 1062 UK based nursing staff were recruited. The study identified the following nursing care that was missed or not provided: patient ambulation, talking and listening, nonverbal communication, communicating with significant others and addressing emotional wellbeing of patients.  The barriers identified to provision of essential nursing care to Covid 19 inpatients were: wearing of personal protective equipment, the severity of Covid 19, not being able to access items in and out of isolation rooms with personal protective equipment, limited time spent with patients, lack of specialized care, lack of knowledge about Covid 19, limited medical supplies, and staff fears of getting infected with Covid 19, hence spent less time with patients. The study thus, recommended the need to develop a guideline of nursing strategies to address the areas of importance identified in this study, and include the guideline in global pandemic planning.
