SOLUTION
The Great Depression was one of the worst periods in the western world from 1929 to 1939, characterized by economic downturns. The “New Deal” was initiated by president Roosevelt as from the year 1933, comprising of various programs and Acts geared towards enhancing recovery from the great depression through activities, such as stabilization of the economy, creation of employment, boosting business recovery, and offering relief to the citizens.
For this discussion I will discuss two components of the New Deal namely, the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) program and National Industrial Recovery (NIRA). CCC was established as an executive order by Roosevelt in 1933, and offered employment relief to young men aged between 18 and 25 years on various environmental projects in the course of the Great Depression (Corbett et al 2016). The minorities, including African Americans, Native Americans, and families under the government assistance were recruited in work camps, whereby they earned around $30 per month. However, I learnt that in as much as the amendment banned racial discrimination in the CCC, the African American men enrolled in the program lived and worked in segregated camps.
