Initial Post Instructions
For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2:
- Option 1: Does democracy require equality of income or wealth? Discuss why democracy might make a country more or less egalitarian?
- Option 2: Political scientist Larry Sabato has proposed a new constitutional convention (Links to an external site.). Select any one of his proposed ideas and write a short list of pros and cons for this idea and support your reasoning.

SOLUTION
YES because income inequality undermines democracy. Democracy refers to a government type whereby the public is given the power and authority to select their preferred governing leaders through a free and fair election process (Nwogu, 2015). As such, democracy revolves around encouraging the public to have active participation in civic life as well as the country’s politics. In addition, it is concerned with promoting the citizens’ human rights and is founded on a rule of law whereby the rules and laws of the country apply equally to each and every citizen of the United States (Greenberg and Page, 2018).
Furthermore, Yi and Woo (2014) mention that democracy is founded on the egalitarianism philosophy, which signifies that all citizens of a country are equal to one another, and have equal rights with regards to gender, political beliefs, economic status, and religion.
