Professor and Class,

I must admit that my knowledge and perspective of biomedical research has really expanded. I no longer take for granted the ethical principles that are applied in today’s research. Reading about past unethical research studies such as the Tuskegee study made me appreciate the efforts that the nursing profession and related stakeholders have put in place to ensure that biomedical research remains ethically sound. Research ethics need researchers to ensure beneficence by doing good and non-maleficence by not harming the participants (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2017). In the real sense, ethical principles mean that researchers must obtain informed consent from potential research participants, reduce the risk of harm to patients, protect their anonymity, privacy, and confidentiality, avoid the use of deceptive practices, and allow the participants the right to withdraw from the research (Doody & Noonan, 2016).
