Change is part of our daily healthcare environment. Clinical nursing judgments based on quality and safety, as well as protocols and standards, reflect our patient-centered care values.
- What steps could you take to develop more resilience in your practice setting?
- How might you communicate a change in practice to patients and nursing peers?
SOLUTION
Resilience involves protecting oneself from stress and pressure to improve stress tolerance as well as the ability to withstand difficulties and go back to normalcy following the occurrence of a stressful event (Kester & Wei, 2018). Resilience improves adaptability during difficult and stressful times. Considering the stressful nature of the nursing profession, nurses are at a high risk of getting burnout, stress, and fatigue (Kester & Wei, 2018). The demands of the nursing profession need the nurses to quickly and effectively adapt to any changes and challenges that present to ascertain continued provision of quality and effective patient care while maintaining high levels of resilience. To build resilience in my practice settings, I would cultivate the spirit of attention and awareness. The awareness of our emotions allows us to be more rational in responding to situations and to overcome the automatic responses to pressure and stress (Wei, Roberts, Strickler, & Corbett, 2019). Understand our own feelings and reactions to situations enables us to manage them effectively, reducing the risk of being subdued by our reactions and emotions towards situations. Another approach I would use is practicing mindfulness behaviors such as taking deep breaths to aid in differentiating between feeling and responding to emotion. Also, teaching oneself to increase knowledge on the problem-solving options allows one to effectively handle challenging situations using the best interventions possible and also by viewing things from diverse perspectives (American Nursing Association (ANA, 2015).
