SOLUTION

Purpose of the Study The research seeks to assess leadership practices of frontline medical-surgical nurses (FMSNs).
Type of Research & the Design The study was qualitative research since the data used is non-technical (descriptive) and looks into the employee and nurses behaviour. Statistical methods were used to validate the data. The research design was a non-experimental cross-sectional online survey design.
Sample The samples were collected from all the states except West Virginia. 1,546  nurses and employees participated in the online survey. The target group was registered nurses (RNs) ages 18-70 and with an active license in at least one state.
Data Collection Data needed for the study were sampled through an online survey designed to examine demographic behaviour.  The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI)  had 30 behavioural statements assessing five competencies. The participants were sourced through advertisement on the social media platforms designed precisely for the research only.
Data Analysis  Data analysis was conducted using the SPSS. Pearson correlations were applied to examine probable relationships between continuous variables.
Limitations The research was subject to limitation due to the pandemic hit; hence the data collected was a convenience sample collected through the help of a professional organization that emphasizes leadership development. The item placed in the LPI does not represent all the leadership behaviour but only those observed from nurses’ self-reports. Social and selection bias arose in carrying out the survey. Finally, caution must be applied in interpreting the relationship between leadership behaviours since a descriptive cross-sectional research design is insufficient to assess causal relationships.
