Reflection Questions

Reflect on your current or prior practice experiences.

  • Paragraph One
    • Patients of any age, gender, cultural background or socio-economic status can be victims of violence. Consider a patient population you are currently working with or have worked with in the past. For what type of violence might they be at risk? What are some related findings that might alert you to investigate further?
  • Paragraph Two
    • Screening for signs of violence and abuse is a part of patient health history assessments. Have you observed the questions being asked by nurses or have you asked them to patients? Do you believe these screenings are typically completed in detail? Explain your answer.

SOLUTION

Both primary and emergency care settings are important settings in which to screen and identify violence. In my experience as a caregiver, I have learned that anyone can be a victim of violence, whether it is from intimate partners, parents, and those that are close to us. I work with a wide range of patients, including children and the elderly. In a case involving elderly abuse, I noticed some bruises that the patient could not explain. This was a case of physical abuse on the elderly. These bruises are the ones that alerted me.

Screening for violence and abuse is very important, especially in the healthcare setting. Screening for violence might encourage victims of abuse, who would not otherwise do so, to disclose abuse, or to recognize their own experience as victims of abuse. This allows healthcare professionals to provide immediate support or refer them to specialists for help.
