SOLUTION
Herein, I will be comparing two poems. The first poem is called epitaph by Merrit Malloy and the second is an original that I created. Below is Merrit Malloy’s poem:
When I die
Give what’s left of me away
To children
And old me that wait to die.
And if you need to cry,
Cry for your brother
Walking the street beside you.
And when you need me,
Put your arms
Around anyone
And give them
What you need to give to me.
I want to leave you something,
Something better
Than words
Or sounds.
Look for me
In the people I’ve known
Or loved,
And if you cannot give me away,
At least let me live on in your eyes
And not your mind.
You can love me most
By letting
Hands touch hands,
By letting bodies touch bodies,
And by letting go
Of children
That need to be free.
Love doesn’t die,
People do.
So, when all that’s left of me
Is love,
Give me away.
Merit Malloy is known for her incredible poetry, which she has published in numerous books over the years. some of her books include the cost of living, how love works, the people who didn’t say goodbye, we hardly see each other anymore, and my song for him who never sang to me (Malloy, 2013a). Unfortunately, for such a well-published and outstanding poet, there is little information about the author. In the cost of living, she states that she is a mother of two daughters and a grandmother to one grandchild (Malloy, 2013a). The poem included above has gone viral on several occasions and has come to be one of the people’s favorites of her work.
Below is my poem, inspired by Merrit Malloy’s epitaph:
For what it’s worth,
I hope we had a good time,
That we shared lots of laughter,
That I touched your life.
For what it’s worth,
You touched my life,
Made my days better,
Put a smile on my face.
For what it’s worth,
I hope the grief gets easier,
That you will get stronger,
That you will live on without me,
For what it’s worth,
Pass my love to others,
Put a smile on their faces,
Let me live on, in the love you have.
