Mental Health in Rural Areas

The disparity of mental health issues between rural and urban areas has been a major
issue of debate over the years. According to recent studies, around 60 million people live in rural
areas within the United States of America (Morales et al., 2020). The population in rural areas
encounter more challenges as compared to their urban counterparts when it comes to issues such
as seeking treatment for mental illnesses, inadequate healthcare professionals, stigma from the
community members, poverty, as well as lack of adequate mental health facilities among others.
These factors hinder effective delivery of care for the rural population, hence creating a disparity
between the rural and urban mental healthcare situation. It is crucial to understand the factors
that represent efficiency in delivery of mental healthcare services so as to accurately highlight
the disparities prevalent in rural areas. It can also act as a guideline to help reverse the situation
in rural areas pertaining prevalence of mental health issues.
According to Matsea et al (2018), various factors characterize efficiency in delivery of
mental health care and they include accessibility of healthcare services, the quality of care,
affordability, and accountability. The effectiveness with which care is delivered also plays a
crucial role in determining the welfare of the patients. However, most of these elements are
lacking in most rural settings, which impacts mental health negatively. Little priority has been
given to mental health in rural areas, and the current state of health services in these areas is
appalling.
Rural population in America tends to have a higher prevalence of depression and suicide
cases as compared with those living in urban areas (Capriotti et al., 2020). In addition, Capriotti
et al. (2020) add that approximately 19.1% of the population aged 18 and above have a case of
mental illness while almost 5% of the rural adults have encountered suicidal ideation. However,

Mental Health in Rural Areas 3
despite the prevalence of the mental health issues, there is only one mental healthcare provider
(psychiatrist) for every 30,000 residents in most rural areas in the country. The shortage of
healthcare professionals has plagued most rural areas in the country, forcing patients to endure
long waitlists before attaining mental health care. According to Capriotti et al (2020), one of the
factors contributing to shortage of mental healthcare professionals is that approximately 60% of
visits are facilitated through primary care as opposed to specialty care. As such, primary care
alone cannot cater to specific treatment plans for all individuals with mental illnesses, and hence
there is need for proper integration of mental health care.
