Instructions
For this assignment, complete the following:
- Review from the lesson and textbook readings argumentative appeals, models for argument, effective and correct use of sources, and the purposes for/examples of annotated bibliographies. Assess any feedback provided by the professor and/or your peers from discussion.
- Refer to the “Sample Week 3 Assignment” document for success.
- Compose a full, rich, detailed paragraph discussing your research goals. The “Sample Week 3 Assignment” document will guide you.
- Compose a full, rich, detailed paragraph discussing your research goals. The “Sample Week 3 Assignment” document will guide you.
- Compose full APA References for six scholarly sources, ideally three that support your points and three that oppose them, but no fewer than two opposing sources.
- Write a rich annotation for each source, according to best practices studied in your readings and as demonstrated in the “Sample Week 3 Assignment” document.
- This paragraph of approach and purpose must answer all of the following questions in good depth and detail in this single rich paragraph:
- What has been your approach to finding your sources?
- What have you been looking for?
- How successful have you been?
- Do you plan to change strategies, and/or do you have additional specific sources or search strategies in mind?
- Keep in mind that your purpose is analytical. You will very briefly summarize the source in a single sentence, then move into the source’s credibility, relevance, timeliness, and usefulness, followed by detailing specific connections to your argument and points and to other sources, if applicable. By the time you have finished this assignment, you should have a very clear idea of how your argument and the conversation between your voice and your sources will play out. This assignment will also provide your instructor with a solid preview of the quality of your argument as a whole.
- Before submission, proofread and edit carefully for APA, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. While you are strongly encouraged to utilize electronic proofreading and APA tools, that is just your first line of offense. You should then always perform your own careful proofreading, silently and aloud, asking others to proofread if possible.

SOLUTION
Approach
My approach to finding my sources has been to identify the most relevant and current
articles that outline the mental health issues in both rural and urban areas. The goal of this
research is to assess the disparities of mental health issues in the rural areas. Times are changing,
and various factors such as Covid 19 have had a major impact on mental health both in rural and
urban areas, However, the outcomes in the two areas differ in a major way across the globe as
most rural areas lack access to mental health care, lack adequate professionals such as
psychiatrists, and resources including healthcare facilities. As such, my stance is that the
prevalence of mental health issues is higher in rural areas as compared to the urban areas.
Annotated Bibliography
Morales, D. A., Barksdale, C. L., & Beckel-Mitchener, A. C. (2020). A call to action to address
rural mental health disparities. Journal of clinical and translational science, 4(5),
463–467. https://doi.org/10.1017/cts.2020.42
This article is interesting in that the authors argue that the prevalence of mental illness is the
same in both rural and urban settings. However, the article points out that there are major
disparities in mental health outcomes between the two settings. There is also a suggestion to use
a research framework like the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities
research framework to identify the disparities and potential solution to this challenge.
Matsea, T., Ryke, E., & Weyers, M. (2018). Assessing mental health services in a rural setting:
Service providers’ perspective. International Journal of Mental Health, 47(1), 26-49. This study describes eight factors that characterize efficient mental health services, and how they
affect rural areas, among them accessibility of services, the services coverage, quality of care, accountability, as well as the effectiveness of mental health care delivery. This article is relevant
as it highlights the factors that define a good mental health service, which are lacking in most
rural settings. This source is useful in supporting my thesis on assessing the mental health issues
prevalence in the rural areas.
Byrne, L., Happell, B., & Reid-Searl, K. (2017). Acknowledging Rural Disadvantage in Mental
Health: Views of Peer Workers. Perspectives in psychiatric care, 53(4), 259–265.
https://doi.org/10.1111/ppc.12171
This article further supports my points by highlighting some of the barriers hindering the rural
populations from accessing quality mental health care. The identified barriers are transport
means, distance to the healthcare facilities, as well as inadequate mental health
professionals/services. This source is credible in that it uses the healthcare professionals
deployed in rural settings as the study participants. This gives them a chance to outline the
challenges in these areas from a professional perspective, and without any bias. The study was
conducted in the rural regions of Australia, which gives my other sources, such as those based in
the United States a credible comparative reference.
