Read the course theme announcement. What is the course theme?
The course theme is the Issues Arising from Rural or Urban Living.
Which debates in the course theme announcement interest you the most? List two of the debates from the course theme announcement (you may list more than two)
The debates in the course theme announcement that interests me the most are:
- Poverty’s impact specific to living in urban or rural areas.
- Mental health factors specific to living in urban or rural areas. (Mental illness, treatment, larger impacts on the family, community, etc.)
For each debate, where do you stand (What is your opinion?) and why?
I feel that there is a higher prevalence of poverty in the rural areas in comparison to urban areas. Poverty impacts people’s lives adversely, for instance, poor families in rural areas lack access to crucial health and human services.
My stand on mental health factors in regard to living in urban or rural areas, is that rural areas tend to have more cases of mental health issues as compared to urban areas. I feel that residents with mental health illnesses in rural areas may fear the stigma associated with seeking treatment where all members of the communities know each other, hence lack of confidentiality. Additionally, the limited number of mental health facilities and professionals may hinder proper care delivery.
Finally, choose from those two debates: Which one do you think you are more likely to write about? Why?
I have learned from this week’s lesson that it is essential for a writer to carefully assess and identify various issues linked to the theme (Chamberlain, 2022). I think that I will write about mental health, as this is an area I am really interested in. As a nurse, I feel that it is imperative to have adequate knowledge on the mental health issues affecting our patients in either rural or urban areas, and what mitigation measures can be adopted to address the issues. As such, the debate that I choose from the two is mental health factors specific to living in urban or rural areas.
